Piz Bernina summit (4049m.a.s.l.) from Diavolezza: The steep ice apron in the centre of the image has almost completely disappeared, exposing much more of the steep rock face below the summit. Prominent meltwater gullies in the lower part of the right image show that ablation was strong even at the considerable altitude of nearly 4000 m.a.s.l. in 2003 (photos Joachim Wolff).
