Axel Heiberg - Between Lake repeat photos
1977 |
2008 |
View from White Glacier Hill across the tongue of White Glacier (foreground) towards Thompson Glacier (centre); in the depression between the two glaciers is Between Lake. In 1977 the photo was taken after the draining of the lake. This is why chunks of ice are stranded around the remaining, small lake. By Thompson Glacier has thinned, in particular near the lake, and it has also become flatter. As the surface of White Glacier has lowered also, water can now leave the lake basin at a much lower level, and no more annual outburst floods occur.
