Floating extensions into the sea of valley glaciers are termed glacier tongues. Here, the Erebus Glacier tongue with its saw-toothed flanks, flows off Mount Erebus into McMurdo Sound. Smooth snow-covered sea ice surrounds the tongue on all sides. MH
