Stromboli's population faces the damage of a tsunamiA tsunami and a major ash fall caused, not by an eruption, but by the landslide of 30. December 2002 reminds us all that Stromboli is not a "toy volcano". It even forced Civil Defence to close the island to tourists, until an efficient alarm system against future similar phenomena will be tested. However, no evacuation order was issued. Nevertheless most residents preferred to spend the last night of 2002 in a safer and jollier environment such as the island of Lipari. This page shows the tsunami damage and the life on a Stromboli as lonely as very few people have ever experienced. All times are local (GMT + 1hr). |
