Crater Lake

Llao Rock

The upper part of Llao Rock (top left) is a cross section of a huge rhyodacite lava flow erupted a short time before the caldera-forming eruption. Compare this situation to Skell Head. Note that the lava flow was emplaced on top of a layer of pumice (white material below the dark grey lava of Llao Rock). Even lower down (below the trees) older and thinner andesitic lava flows can be seen. On the right is a dike, starting right at the lake level and rising towards the upper right (dark grey band running about parallel to a longish, bright green patch of vegetation).
