Skell Head provides (similar to Llao Rock) a cross section through a massive lave flow which got truncated by the caldera's collapse. Imagine the lava flowing away from you down an ancient valley on the northeastern slope of Mount Mazama. During our boat trip just south of here we came accross the Old Man of Crater Lake, a tree trunk which has been floating in Crater Lake for about a century. Obviously it's location varies according to the wind direction, it's association with Skell Head is entirely coincidental ;-) |
