Iliamna and Augustine VolcanoesIliamna (3053m a.s.l.) and Augustine (1260m a.s.l.) are two volcanoes belonging to the chain of Alaska Peninsula, like Douglas and Fourpeaked Volcanoes in the SW and Redoubt Volcano in the NE. Augustine, a tiny island in the Lower Cook Inlet, has a size comparable to that of Stromboli, Italy. |
Leaving Homer airport, the airfield closest to Augustine and Iliamna Volcano. | Light from Iliamna Volcano reflects from a partially frozen glacial lake on the volcano's eastern base. | The crest of the four peaks forming Iliamna Volcano from which large glaciers descend. | Iliamna's main summit with the Alaska Range in the background and Redoubt Volcano on the right. |
Approaching Augustine from northwest: the morning sun is dissipating the morning fog above its peak. | Steaming is released from the dome at the summit of Augustine Volcano; shoreline of West Cook Inlet in the background. | Note how wave action has eroded the near coast of Augustine Island, forming a coastal cliff; Iliamna and Redoubt volcanoes appear in the far background (NE). | Strong wind from the southwest drags steam emitted from the lava dome along the volcano's slope. |
Traces of recent pyroclastic flows which descended over the SW flank of Augustine Volcano on the left. | Close-up of the pyroclastic flows which have burnt vegetation on the SW flanks, deeply eroded by runoff. | Close-up of part of the active dome; note small spines typical for volcanic domes rising in the dense dome steam. | Completing the circuit around the active dome; West Cook Inlet coastline in the background. |
Material from a partial dome collapse in the foreground has flowed for some hundred metres. Bluish gas is visible on the slopes at left. | Spectacular view across the dome from NW. Douglas and Fourpeaked Volcanoes in the background behind the chain of small clouds. | Augustine Island from southwest. In the far background, at right, is the Kenai Peninsula with Homer. | Return to Homer airport on the eastern coast of Cook Inlet, Kenai Peninsula. |
