Previous«(5) Suevite deposition: Because of the "eruption cloud’s" collapse a hot ash rain falls on the crater and its surroundings. The rock fragments, when impacting on the ground, are hot enough to be welded together. This generates a massive blanket of Suevite, the impact breccie so typical of the Nördlinger Ries (left: Suevite quarry near Aumühle near the northern rim of the crater). Suevite shows a lot of evidence of high temperatures during its formation: partially melted and welded fragments and vesicles. It is reminiscent of ignimbrite, a volcanic deposit formed during the collapse of a plinianian eruption cloud.»Next
