Nördlinger Ries impact structure

KalkriffImpact-6
Previous«(6) Lake formation, sedimentation and erosion: During the millennia following the impact a saline lake formed within the crater. It was almost as big as Lake Constance and existed for about 2 million years. Within the lake limestone deposition took place, especially along the shore where algae formed great reefs. Today these show the former lake level quite clearly, such as at the Goldberg (left). During the millions of years which followed major parts of the Suevite blanket and of the lake deposits were eroded, and only remnants remain.
