I have developed an activity using the locations in "Of Mice and Men" in which the students use a map of California to identify the locations that are written about in the book. Just by asking, a number of local AAA offices have given me maps of California. After teaching them how to use a mapping grid system, I give them a stockcard copy of a map of California. I list on the board the locations they are to find. They include Weed, Auburn, Sacramento, San Francisco, Monterey, Salinas, Soledad, the Gabilan Mountains and the Salinas River. For good measure, I throw in Los Angeles, San Diego and the Sierras. They are graded on their relative accuracy and the pleasantness of their final product. The students have responded well to this project. They really like doing maps.
