  • The unnamed narrator is a young South African man in his twenties who moves to London after graduating from the University of Cape Town with degrees in mathematics and English. He takes a job as a computer programmer to support himself while pursuing his dream of becoming a poet.

    Monica Vitti, an Italian actress with whom the narrator becomes infatuated. He seeks refuge in her films from his unfulfilling life and work.

    The various women with whom the narrator has affairs in London, none of whom inspire the passion he believes he needs to produce great poetry.
