Etna 2018-2021
July 2018: Bocca Nuova
After the eruption at the South-East cone during February-April 2017, Etna started a rather long period of inactivity. This ended in spring 2018, when strombolian eruptions deep within the western pit of Bocca Nuova resumed. Subsidence of lava layers deposited by the 2015 December and 2016 May paroxysmal eruptions of Voragine was still going on, visible in the collapsing terraces encircling the active pit in the foreground where incandescent scoria appear about 200m below the observing spot at the end of the video. Clips were taken from 6pm to 9pm on 16 July 2018. The climb took place with Etna Guide Rosario Basile. We warmly thank Etna Sud Guides and Funivia dell'Etna for the logistic support.
