  • Tracy Farber
    The protagonist and narrator. A single, witty, and ambitious literature professor at a university near New York City. Tracy is skeptical about romantic clichés and questions the assumptions of literary tragedies, especially Tolstoy’s claim that “happy families are all alike.” Her journey revolves around reconciling her intellect with her emotions.

    George
    A charming and successful man Tracy meets and begins a serious romantic relationship with. He seems ideal at first, and much of the plot revolves around Tracy navigating this relationship and her expectations.

    Aaron
    Tracy’s ex-boyfriend, who reappears in her life. His reemergence forces her to confront unresolved feelings and reassess her desires.

    Sarah
    Tracy’s friend and colleague in academia. She offers support and often serves as a sounding board for Tracy’s internal debates about life and love.

    Rachel
    Another friend of Tracy’s, also involved in academia. Provides comic relief and alternative perspectives on relationships and happiness.

    Dean Setrakian
