The novel follows the journey of Maddie Wright, a 25-year-old British-Ghanaian woman woman living in London. The novel explores themes of familial duty, multicultural identity, career struggles, and personal growth.

Maddie's life is far from fulfilling. She is the primary caregiver for her father, who suffers from advanced Parkinson's disease, while her mother spends most of her time in Ghana and her brother lives elsewhere. At work, Maddie faces challenges as the only Black employee in her office and deals with a difficult boss. When her mother returns to London, Maddie seizes the opportunity to move out and live independently. She finds a flat share, begins socializing more, and navigates the complexities of online dating.
