Johannes Vermeer
Vermeer is a talented but enigmatic Catholic painter and Griet’s employer. He recognizes Griet’s artistic sensibility and involves her in his work. Their relationship remains complex and professional but stirs jealousy in his wife, Catharina. After his death, Vermeer leaves Griet the pearl earrings she wore for the painting.

Catharina Bolnes Vermeer
Catharina is Vermeer’s wife and mother to their many children. She becomes increasingly jealous of Griet as she notices her husband’s interest in her and discovers that Griet posed for the painting wearing her pearl earrings. Catharina ultimately forces Griet to leave the household.

Maria Thins
Maria Thins is Catharina’s pragmatic mother who manages the household finances. She tolerates Griet’s involvement with Vermeer because it benefits his art and income.

Pieter (the butcher’s son)
Pieter is Griet’s suitor who persistently courts her despite her initial reluctance. He eventually marries Griet, providing financial stability for her family.

Pieter van Ruijven
Van Ruijven is Vermeer’s wealthy but lecherous patron who pressures him to paint Griet. His inappropriate behavior towards maids makes him a threatening figure in Griet’s life.

Cornelia
Cornelia is one of Vermeer and Catharina’s daughters who dislikes Griet and causes trouble for her by revealing secrets, such as Griet wearing Catharina’s earrings.

Frans
Frans is Griet’s brother who works as an apprentice but faces difficulties after becoming involved with his master’s wife.
