Kyra Menaker-Mossbacher: Delaney’s wife, a highly ambitious realtor who prioritizes her career and financial success. She becomes progressively anti-immigrant as the story unfolds.
Cándido Rincón: An undocumented Mexican immigrant struggling to survive in Los Angeles. Despite facing immense hardships, he retains hope and displays moral strength.
América Rincón: Cándido’s 17-year-old wife, who accompanies him to the U.S. in search of a better life but faces disillusionment and despair due to their dire circumstances.

Socorro: The infant daughter of Cándido and América, born amid their struggles. She tragically drowns during a landslide at the novel’s end.
