Peyton Farquhar: A wealthy Southern planter and Confederate supporter, Farquhar is the protagonist. He is so important that through much of the story, he is almost the only character. Most of the other characters don't even have names. He is a romantic idealist who attempts to sabotage the Union-controlled Owl Creek Bridge but is tricked by a Union scout and subsequently hanged. Much of the story revolves around his imagined escape during his final moments.

Mrs. Farquhar: Peyton’s wife, who appears briefly in the story. She is depicted as a devoted and idealized figure in Peyton’s imagination, representing his longing for home and family.

Supporting Characters

Union Scout: Disguised as a Confederate soldier, this spy deceives Farquhar into attempting to destroy the bridge, leading to his capture and execution. The scout symbolizes the harsh realities of war and deception.

Union Soldiers: These include:
A captain, who oversees Farquhar’s execution.
A sergeant, who orchestrates the hanging by stepping off the plank.
