Dr. Roberto Carniel has a degree in Computer Science and a Ph.D. in computational mathematics. He is researcher in applied geophysics and a member of the seismology research group at the Dipartimento di Georisorse e Territorio, Università degli Studi di Udine, Italy. Since 1997 he is the Secretary of the working group "Seismic phenomena associated with volcanic activity" of the European Seismological Commission, which meets every year at a different volcano. He authored several publications on international journals, many of which on the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research. In the same journal he co-edited two special issues, one (published in 2003) dedicated to the memory of Bruno Martinelli, and one (to be published in 2006) summarizing the results of the EU-funded european project MULTIMO.
