Dykes

Megalo Vouno (330m) is the highest point in the northern part of Santorini. It is one of the older eruptive centres of the volcanic complex. Subsidence due to the formation of the Santorini caldera have exposed the inside of this volcano. As a result of this feeder dykes can be clearly seen as near-vertical slabs of rock. One, in the left part of the photo, leads al the way up to the horizon.

Megalo Vouno is where most of the flower photos of the «Colours of Santorini colours» section were taken. Pam and Jürg, during their stay in Oia undertook various hikes accross this mountain in order to reach a kiosk, where walnut cake of heavenly quailty was on sale ;-)
