Several kilometers further downhill s small part of the lava finds its way
to the surface, perhaps because of a partial blockage of the tube system. Here an
active pahoehoe flow slowly advances over an older flow. Many square kilometers
of Ohia forest (some visible in the background) were covered by the flows.
