Crater Lake

Devil's Backbone

Devil's Backbone (centre of picture) is probably the most impressive dike within Crater Lake caldera, leading all the way up from lake level to the caldera rim. It must have fed one of the several eruptive centers of Mount Mazama previous to the caldera-foming eruption. The fact that it sticks out like a slab from the inner caldera slope is due to its higher resistance to erosion. Part of Devil's Backbone can also be seen from above on the caldera rim.
