What's it about?
The United States Holocaust Museum has hundreds of oral history videos in which survivors of the concentration and extermination camps tell their story. The links to these podcasts can be found on the handout «survivor podcasts». The oral history videos cover the 1930s and 1940s and are excellent sources for students to study the Holocaust (either individually or in groups). They could, for example, research one particular topic (e.g. school in the 1930s, Kristallnacht, life in the ghetto, Auschwitz, death marches) and then either write a paper or present their topic to the rest of the class. Another possibility – which can be done in one lesson – is to use the handout describing Auschwitz and then play 5 podcasts that focus on particular aspects of the Holocaust. These podcasts and their websites are included in the handout «survivor podcasts».
