Written by Ariane Knüsel
Contents | collection of eyewitness accounts (transcribed interviews) of British women, a podcast on women’s war services (based on these interviews), and official German sources criticising female labour |
Suitable for | Gymnasium |
Prerequisites | knowledge of traditional gender roles in 19th century and early 20th century Europe, knowledge of the First World War as a war of attrition and the importance of the production of war material |
Time | 2-3 lessons (depending on how many sources are read; the British accounts can be read and discussed in two lessons) |
What's it about?
These sources focus on the role of women in the First World War. The handout “British women in the war” contains a collection of transcribed interviews that were made as part of an oral history project by the Imperial War Museum. They have been organised into four topics. The podcast uses those sources as well (and additional ones). The German sources are an example of a critical (male) view of female labour.
