Introduction

An eruption started on a flank of Piton de la Fournaise, La Réunion, on 9 March 1998, ending a quiet phase that began in 1992. Roberto Carniel and Marco Fulle visited the volcano five times between 19. and 29. April 1998. STROMBOLI ON-LINE can now offer you these pages with Marco's photos and Roby's videos.

Piton de la Fournaise

The island of La Réunion lies above a mantle hot spot which feeds basaltic magma to its volcanoes. Eruptions typically produce very liquid basaltic lavas which build up wide and relatively flat shield volcanoes and often form «pahoehoe» flows. Recent volcanic activity is limited to the Piton de la Fournaise complex in the southeastern part of the island.
