Pam, our guide, expects us at the Mangatepopo roadend. 1150 m.a.s.l., below the western flank of Ngauruhoe volcano. She is eager to set off well before sunrise so we can climb the steepest part before the summer sun begins to heat the lava slopes below Ngauruhoe.
