Antarctica: the icy continent

Among the earliest glaciological studies in Antarctic were those undertaken by the British expeditions of Scott in the early years of the 20th Century. Scott’s second but ill-fated expedition established this base at Cape Evans in McMurdo Sound, seen during the tail-end of a blizzard. Barnes Glacier in the background is a cliff grounded on the sea floor. MH
